Group Information (where you are based, number of members, normal group activities etc…): Action Old Kilpatrick aims to enhance the environment and celebrate the heritage of Old Kilpatrick. We have a regularly active group of 25 to 30 people with many other community members contributing on an ad hoc basis. The committee has 10 members and normally meets once a month. We have a website, newsletter and Facebook page which enable us to let the community know what we are doing and to get involved. Our 3 main activities are: 1) Environmental . We organise (in normal times) 2 litter picks per month, in Lusset Glen and the Saltings. Both picks are well attended, usually around 8 people per session, and have been running now for 6 years without a break until Covid when we were advised to discontinue group picks. 2) Horticulture We have established 7 flower beds in the village which are maintained through monthly sessions from April to October. We have also installed 4 planters at Kilpatrick Station. 3) Local history. We conducted an oral history project on the village which was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and resulted in a book and the creation of 2 audio walks around the village. These activities have increased skills within our community and improved well being.
What will you use the money for?: During Covid we have been unable to do our organised litter picks but have made our litter picking equipment available to people who want to do "5 minute picks" when they have been out for exercise. We would like to extend this by offering small biodegradable bags that people can use when they are out for a walk, to either take home and put in their own bins or put in public bins. We would also like to make available some long handled picks for hard to reach litter. Once restrictions allow, we will be organising large village clean ups and at this point we want to separate the litter in to landfill and recyclable, something we haven't done much of before, and it would be useful to have 2 trolleys designed for this purpose. In relation to horticulture, we normally bring on our own bedding plants in our greenhouse at Old Dalnottar Cemetery, but this has not been possible this year due to Covid restrictions. We therefore need to buy in plants for this year's display, to be planted out by individual members who have responsibility for each of our sites. We also require some peat free compost to replenish the beds.
Who will benefit from this money?: Having done both the litter picks and village gardening for several years now we know how much the community appreciate our work and how much they feel the look of the place has been enhanced by what we do. (Feedback: "You have transformed the village.") Given the significant increase in visitors to Old Kilpatrick during the pandemic, it is likely that many people, having discovered the village for perhaps the first time, will keep returning in future. This would benefit our local shops and pubs through potential increased spend. In general terms we want to continue to have a nice environment for everyone, residents and visitors, to enjoy. It is also important that we continue to offer opportunities for local people of all ages and abilities to get involved in volunteering. In normal times, we wear hi vis jackets with our name/ logo on when litter picking or gardening and this visibility has allowed people to approach us and ask how they can help. We are confident that we are well known in the village and that people know our activities are open to all. We hope and believe that we can be a means of creating an enhanced sense of belonging and pride in Old Kilpatrick.
