Group Information (where you are based, number of members, normal group activities etc…): Clydesider Creative provides a 'positive community space', in print, online and in person. It engages and involves people from many different walks of life and showcases the many inspiring and creative individuals and organisations making a difference in West Dunbartonshire. We publish Clydesider community magazine and have over 150 volunteers and contributors who have helped with everything from providing editorial and photographic content to DIY, design, distribution and social media - this gives the magazine a real sense of community ownership in the publication. We are based in Old Kilpatrick. Pre-covid we ran creative community events across West Dunbartonshire plus a weekly Community Newsroom in Levengrove Park. Over the past year we moved these activities online hosting a virtual Creative Cafe From Your Couch and establishing a Community Response Network to keep local groups and organisations connected. We also published a monthly Covid Mini Mag during the first lockdown and have now returned to our quarterly magazine and worked with local organisations to distribute it directly to those least likely to have access to local news and information online.
What will you use the money for?: We will use the funding to continue developing and publishing Clydesider community magazine and our online content. This will include publishing four issues of the magazine in the next financial year plus posting positive stories, interviews, information and creative content on our website and social media platforms and hosting a regular virtual Community Newsroom until we can meet in person. The funding will help cover our part-time editorial assistant post.
Who will benefit from this money?: We know from regular feedback that a wide section of our community benefits from reading the Clydesider magazine or accessing our stories/information online. Our volunteers and contributors come from all walks of life, from school pupils to pensioners many have struggled with a range of life challenges and we provide support, advice and encouragement to enable them to develop their skills and confidence to share their stories in their own voices. The aim of our solution-focused community media is to promote the positive while tackling the negative and we work with our volunteers and contributors to help them do this as we recognise that certain groups are often excluded from the mainstream media. Last year we reacted quickly to the pandemic publishing four monthly Mini Mags and working with local community organisations to ensure they reached people most likely to be digitally excluded and struggling to access essential local information about support services, local information about support services, local food deliveries, helplines etc. We will continue to do this in 2021 and host the monthly Community Response Network for as long as is required.
