Group Information (where you are based, number of members, normal group activities etc…): Meadow United is a disability group which has been going for over ten years. It is run by the members themselves and has both male and female members, all of whom have disabilities and live in West Dunbartonshire. The purpose of the group is to reduce isolation and loneliness which can affect people with disabilities. In normal times we met three times a week at the Meadows Centre in Dumbarton to play football, develop our skills as footballers and keep both physically and mentally fit. We have 16 active members.
What will you use the money for?: The funding will be used to support the activities of the group which are predominately football based but the main aim of the group is to allow members to feel part of a community and share experiences with one another that help them keep well, keep connected and keep healthy. Our costs at present are minimal (in normal times) and are met by the members, however, we would like to extend our activities to include visits to places of interest (both football and non-football) so that we can foster the friendships and support within the group.
We held a football day in 2019 with other disability teams taking part. We would like to repeat this as it was a great success.
Who will benefit from this money?: The group has members from 18 to 65 years of age all of whom have disabilities including autism, down syndrome, acquired brain injury and bi-polar. The group members find the group a good and safe place to come and participate in the game they love which would not be open to them anywhere else.
